About Metairie LA
Metairie (MEH-tuh-ree) is the first suburb of New Orleans, Louisiana located on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain between the cities of New Orleans and Kenner. In fact, the name Métairie is a French term meaning “small tenant farm” where land owners were paid in produce by their tenants in return for living on the land, a practice also known as sharecropping.
While many of the residential blocks in Metairie may look like they could be anywhere in Louisiana, Metairie Road is lined with a beautiful canopy of old oak trees, and with its twists and turns, the road itself is like a place right out of a storybook.
But the main vein of Métairie is “Vets”, or Veterans Memorial Boulevard. The Vets is loaded with things to do and places to shop, including Lakeside Shopping Center, one of the region’s largest malls. It might be a suburb but the residents in Métairie still bleed purple, green and gold on Mardi Gras.
