About Mandeville, Louisiana

In St. Tammany Parish, Mandeville, Louisiana, is known as the oldest incorporated town. Located on the North Shore of Lake Pontchartrain, Mandeville was founded in 1834 by the Marigny de Mandeville family of New Orleans.

In the mid-19th century, Mandeville became a popular hotspot destination of the New Orleans middle class. Daily steamboats would go between Mandeville and New Orleans, packed with jazz musicians. There was jazz music everywhere: on the lakes, in pavilions and dance halls and all throughout Mandeville. In fact, Mandeville was one of the first places outside New Orleans where the new jazz music could be heard.

Today, Mandeville is a unique city, with Lake Pontchartrain as their crowning jewel. Experience great dining, retail therapy, recreational opportunities and local landmarks from which you can learn all about southern Louisiana-livin’ in Mandeville.

What to Do in Mandeville, Louisiana

There’s no place better to begin your tour of your new home in Mandeville than the town’s central hub: the Mandeville Trailhead & Cultural Interpretive Center, a community area with an interactive fountain and splash pad for children, a lookout tower, an amphitheater for local community events including free concerts in the spring and fall. The cultural center features a hands-on museum of Mandeville’s history, complete with short films and dioramas!

If you’re looking for a retreat, the beautiful cottages at the Fontainebleau State Park give you a peaceful view of the sunrise or sunset and a beautiful view of the many nearby live, ancient oaks. You can take a pleasant bike ride along the 30-mile Tammany Trace Trail connecting many different communities. You can also peruse the prehistoric structures and ruins found nearby to discover Native American artifacts, early French settlement ruins and to learn all about Mandeville’s early history.

Once you’ve finished learning about the early settlers of the area, peruse through Mae’s Antiques to get a glimpse of what fashion and home-living décor was like back then. If you’re an avid collector of knick-knacks, Mae’s has a sizable collection of all things vintage, including furniture, jewelry, art, garden and patio décor.

After getting a workout at the state park digging through ruins, kayaking and fishing in bayous at the state park and collecting a few antiques around town, you’re probably seriously thirsty, so head over to the Chafunkta Brewing Company. Enjoy local craft beers like the smooth wheat ale, Chafunkta 985, or experience a richer flavor from the Chafunka Black is Beautiful chocolate stout.
